The UK is one of the most rewarding trips an Indian traveller can plan, and also one of the easiest to over-plan. London alone can fill a week. Add Scotland, the Cotswolds or the Lake District, and suddenly you’re spending more time on trains than in places. This guide covers what a United Kingdom tour package from Delhi should include, how a sensible itinerary looks, and how the visa works, so you can compare offers with confidence.
First, a Key Visa Fact: The UK Is Not Part of Schengen
This surprises many first-time travellers. A Schengen visa does not cover the UK, and a UK visa does not cover Europe. If you’re combining London with Paris or Amsterdam, you’ll need both. Our Europe trip guide explains the Schengen side.
Visa Basics for Indian Travellers
Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa. There’s no visa on arrival and no ETA option for Indian citizens.
- How to apply: Online on the official UK government visa page, followed by a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in India.
- Fee: Recent sources put the six-month visa at around £135 plus VFS service charges, but the fee has changed in the past, so always confirm the current amount on gov.uk.
- Processing time: Typically about three weeks, counted from your biometrics appointment. If appointment slots are full, that waiting time adds to the total. A paid priority service exists if you need it.
- Stay: Up to six months per visit under the standard visa.
- Documents: Passport, proof of funds, travel plans, accommodation details, and evidence of your ties to India such as employment or family commitments.
Apply well before your dates, ideally six to eight weeks ahead. Weak or inconsistent documents are the usual cause of delays and refusals. If you’d like a second pair of eyes on your file, Travelistaan’s visa assistance can review it with you.
How Long Do You Need?
| Trip length | What fits comfortably |
|---|---|
| 5 to 6 days | London, with a day trip |
| 7 to 8 days | London plus one more region |
| 10 to 12 days | London, Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands or the Cotswolds |
| 14 days | Add the Lake District, Wales or Northern Ireland |
The UK is compact on a map but slower than it looks. Trains help, but each move still costs half a day.
Itinerary Ideas
These are starting points that a good planner will adjust.
6 days: London focus. Big Ben and Westminster, the Tower of London, a Thames walk, museums, a West End show and a day trip to Windsor or Oxford. A good first trip for families.
8 days: London and Edinburgh. Fly or take the train north for Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Arthur’s Seat. A strong mix of city energy and old-world atmosphere.
10 to 12 days: add the Highlands or Cotswolds. Rolling hills, small villages and Scottish landscapes. Better with a private driver or a well-planned rail route.
Whichever you choose, stick to two or three bases. Unpacking every night is what wears people out.
What a Good United Kingdom Tour Package Should Include
Ask for an itemised list:
- Return flights from Delhi, and any domestic flights or train tickets
- Hotels by location (near a tube or train station saves time and money)
- Airport and city transfers
- Which sightseeing is included, such as the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle or a day tour
- Breakfast, and whether Indian vegetarian or Jain meals can be arranged
- Visa guidance and travel insurance
- A clear list of exclusions
What Affects the Price
The UK isn’t cheap, but costs vary a lot depending on how you plan.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Travel dates | Summer and Christmas push up flights and hotels |
| Hotel location | Central London costs more than outer zones |
| Transport | Oyster or contactless fares, rail tickets, private transfers |
| Attractions | Castle, museum and show tickets add up |
| Food | Restaurant vs supermarket and takeaway meals |
| Visa and insurance | Government fee, VFS charges and cover |
Shoulder months, especially May, June and September, usually offer the best balance of weather and cost. For official destination information, VisitBritain is a useful reference.
Best Time to Visit
- Spring (March to May): Mild weather and blooming gardens.
- Summer (June to August): Long daylight and warm days, but peak prices and crowds.
- Autumn (September to November): Fewer visitors and rich colours in the countryside.
- Winter (December to February): Christmas lights and markets, but short days and cold, damp weather.
Pack for rain whenever you go. The UK weather can change several times in a day.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming a Schengen visa covers the UK
- Applying for the visa too late
- Packing too many cities into a short trip
- Staying far from a transport hub to save a little money
- Skipping advance tickets for popular attractions
- Comparing packages without checking what each one leaves out
Who Should Choose What
Couples tend to enjoy London with a short Cotswolds or Scottish extension. Families usually do better with one or two bases and plenty of free time.
