Passport Name Change After Marriage: Before the Honeymoon, or After?

Passport Name Change After Marriage

Here is what a lot of newly married couples find out a little too late: you don’t have to change the name in your passport before you fly. Nobody at the airport is going to stop you for carrying your old surname. What will stop you is a ticket that doesn’t match the passport in your hand.

So the real question isn’t “should I change my name?” It’s “which name goes on everything?” Let’s sort that out, so the only thing you’re stressing about on your honeymoon is which beach to pick. (Updated October 2026.)

Is changing the passport name after marriage compulsory?

No. It’s your choice. Your passport stays valid until it expires, with whatever name is printed on it. Plenty of people keep their maiden name in the passport for years and change it only when it’s time to renew.

The trouble starts when your papers disagree with each other. Say your ticket says one name and your passport says another. That’s the thing that causes problems at check-in and at immigration, not the surname itself.

The one rule that matters

Whatever name is printed on the passport you’ll carry, use exactly that everywhere. Same spelling. Same order of first name and surname. That covers:

  • your flight tickets
  • your visa application
  • hotel and resort bookings
  • travel insurance

Airlines often don’t allow name changes after booking, so a small slip at the start can cost you later.

Honeymoon in a month or two? Skip the re-issue

Picture this. You got married in November and you’re flying out in the second week of December. A passport re-issue can take several weeks, and you’d spend those weeks chasing appointments and paperwork instead of planning your trip. If your dates are fixed, the sensible move is to travel on the old passport and update it after you’re back.

Here’s a simple way to decide:

Your situationWhat to do
Honeymoon within 4 to 6 weeksTravel on the existing passport. Change the name later.
Honeymoon in 2 to 3 monthsYou can start, but only if your dates can move.
Honeymoon is more than 3 months awayYou can re-issue first. Get the new passport in hand before you book tickets and apply for visas.
You already hold a visa on the old passportUsually keep the old passport for this trip, and check the visa rules before re-issuing.

Processing times change, so check the current timeline on the official portal before you plan around it.

If you do have time: how the re-issue works

You apply for a re-issue of the passport on the official Passport Seva portal. In short:

  1. Log in and choose re-issue, with the option for a change in personal details such as a name change after marriage.
  2. Fill in the form with your new name exactly as you want it printed.
  3. Gather your documents. This usually means your current passport, address proof, and proof of marriage, such as a marriage certificate or a joint declaration by both spouses in the format the portal asks for. The list can change, so follow the checklist on the portal.
  4. Book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra and pay the fee shown there.
  5. Go to the appointment with your original documents.
  6. Wait for the new passport to arrive by post.

One thing to keep in mind: a re-issued passport is a fresh booklet, and in most cases it carries a new passport number. That matters for visas, which we’ll get to next.

The visa part is where people get tripped up

A visa belongs to a specific passport. So apply with the passport you’ll actually travel on, and write the name on the form exactly as it appears there.

If you re-issue the passport after you’ve already got a visa, you may have to carry both the old passport (with the visa in it) and the new one. Some countries ask you to apply again. E-visas and online travel authorisations are often tied to the passport number, so a new number can mean a new application. The safest habit is to check the embassy’s or the country’s official visa page before you re-issue anything.

Need a hand with the paperwork? Have a look at our visa assistance page. We can help you prepare the documents. The decision, though, is always the embassy’s, so nobody can promise approval.

What to keep in your hand luggage

  • Your passport, with the validity your destination asks for (often six months from the travel date)
  • Visa or e-visa, printed or saved on your phone
  • Tickets and hotel bookings in the exact passport name
  • A copy of your marriage certificate
  • Travel insurance papers in the same name
  • Both passports, if you re-issued after getting a visa

The marriage certificate copy isn’t always asked for. But if a hotel or an officer wonders why you and your partner have different surnames, it saves a lot of awkward explaining. Different surnames are very common, by the way, and perfectly fine.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Booking tickets in the married name while the passport still has the maiden name
  • Starting a re-issue just a few weeks before the trip, with no buffer
  • Getting a visa first and then re-issuing the passport without checking the rule
  • Using a nickname or a short form on a booking
  • Thinking an Aadhaar, PAN or bank update will fix your passport name for international travel. It won’t

Quick answers

Can I fly abroad on my maiden name passport after the wedding?

Yes. Just make sure your ticket, visa and bookings all use the name on that passport.

Can my partner and I travel with different surnames?

Yes. Carry a copy of the marriage certificate to be safe.

How long does a passport name change take?

It can run to several weeks, and it varies. Check the current time and the Tatkaal option on the Passport Seva portal, and don’t squeeze it in right before your trip.

I booked my ticket in the wrong name. What now?

Call the airline right away with your passport details. The sooner you ask, the more options you usually have. Small spelling fixes are sometimes possible, sometimes for a fee, but full name changes are often not allowed.

Do I need to update my Aadhaar or PAN before the honeymoon?

Not for the trip itself. For international travel, your passport is the document that counts.
