Sultanpur, about an hour from Delhi in Gurugram district, offers a middle ground between Okhla’s convenience and Bharatpur’s scale. The park’s wetlands regularly host cranes, flamingos in some years, and a wide range of ducks and waders, with well-marked trails and watchtowers that make spotting birds considerably easier than wading through unmarked terrain elsewhere.
Chambal Safari, near Agra
For a slightly different kind of birding trip, the Chambal river stretch near Agra combines river-based bird watching with sightings of gharials and other river wildlife. It’s further from Delhi than the other spots here, generally paired with an Agra visit, but it offers a genuinely different setting from the wetland parks — river cliffs and sandbanks rather than marshland.
Surajpur Wetland, Greater Noida
A quieter, less-visited option, Surajpur Wetland near Greater Noida draws a smaller crowd than Bharatpur or Sultanpur but still attracts a solid range of migratory species each winter. Its relative lack of visitors makes it appealing for photographers and serious birders who’d rather avoid the crowds that gather at the more famous parks on weekends.
When to Go and What to Bring
Late November through February covers the core migratory season, with December and January typically offering the widest variety of species present at once. Early mornings are almost always the best time to visit any of these spots — birds tend to be most active in the first few hours after sunrise, and the light works better for photography too. Binoculars make a genuine difference here; a lot of species are visible from a distance across open water, and without them, most of the detail is lost.
